The project, Cinematic Space, explored how space is understood and distorted through the lens of a camera. Considering the film Ida, in particular, a scene of a woman looking out of a bus window and her reflection, we generated a language of folded, layered architecture. Explorations began with understanding the film clip itself and then led to a way of understanding a space within Edinburgh’s Old Town Closes.
Our experimentation with projection and layering of the architecture developed into fanned drawings, overlapping information and an acrylic model. This brought forward our languages from the film and applied the same treatment to the Edinburgh Close. This Close became the site for an Art Gallery inspired by the film and our working processes.
The research and exploration into the space on screen culminated in a folding, layered gallery space designed to fan out into an area, layer artwork across several transparent walls, and use the surroundings as a backdrop for the work. This was intended as a temporary pavilion that could be assembled and transported easily, like a film set, blending into and using any architectural context.
